I have always wanted to learn about Jazz. I finally have, and I want everybody to learn about Jazz too. Jazz has four elements like improvisation, syncopation, call + response, and scat singing. I will teach you the elements of Jazz.

Jazz improvisation is just made up. you can normally get improvisation by feeling it in your body, or just throw together music and make a beat. You can also just take your instruments, and start playing. See if you can make a beat.

Syncopation is when you have a beat, and then you have a rhythm in the middle. You can use improvisation for syncopation. Throw together a beat. Tss clap tss is a syncopation rhythm.

Call and response is when you have somebody say something and somebody responds. You can use all the elements for this kind of element. How are you? Great is call and response .

Scat is using made up syllables for a song. Many people use mostly improvisation for scat. Zwee bop a wee bop is scat

On January 31, my class had a music lesson on Jazz. We learned about the four main elements of Jazz. They are improvisation, syncopation, call and response, and scat.

So the first element. Improvisation. Improvisation is when you make up things on the spot with an instrument. Like if I were to go and play the piano and play anything I wanted to without memorizing it, that's improvisation. In Jazz, the music will probably start out with music the musician has memorized, then it'll go to improvisation. The musician or musicians will play at random.

Now, the next element. Syncopation. Syncopation is when there are notes on and off the beats. Like this: Boom    Boom    Boom    Boom

                                                         Tish           Tish           Tish

That's syncopation. So in Jazz, instead of having a beat like this: Boom Boom Boom Boom, there will be syncopation like the example I showed above. It makes it really unique.

Then, there's call and response. When orchestras play music, they really can't shine by playing whatever they want (improvisation). However in Jazz, there will be times where a musician will play like a solo. Everybody will be playing their instruments, but they will be playing kind of like the beat, but not the beat. While everyone is doing that, the random musician will go and play his part. It's like a solo in the middle of the song. Then he/she will go and add to the musicians playing the beat as another person comes out and does their solo. Then the same thing happens over again with the same people. It's like "How are you?" "Great!" The first person that does their solo is the call (How are you?) and the second person is the response (Great!). It's like a music battle.

And the last one is, scat. Scat is like improvisation but, with your voice. This is scat. Zwe boppa wii bop! Zwe boppa wii bop! Scat is really weird noises. Here is another example. Poogh, chi poogh poogh. Poogh chi poogh poogh. Poogh chi poogh poogh.

I had a blast when I had that music class. I learned so much about Jazz. I hope you learned a lot from this post. Maybe you should play an instrument just like me.
