Line Elements

Grade 6  Standards

We're currently studying line elements and the use of lines in art. Students are practicing drawing different thicknesses, styles, and orientations of lines. We'll also be expanding this to include gesture drawing and contour drawing.

Grade - level Comparisons:

Art has two main areas of focus: appreciation and expression. 5th and 6th graders will discuss and respond to works of fine art and music. They will learn and practice the vocabulary associated with a critique of works of art. They will also gain more technical proficiency in creating their own art. Perspective, color usage, shading, and other factors of composition will all be explored. Both grade levels will also learn how to create art using computer tools.

Parent Involvement:

During the year, I will often post links above, that pertain to techniques we're learning and/or artists we're studying. Help reinforce what your child is learning by asking them questions about the techniques. Have them demonstrate on paper for you as they describe the skill.

Support interest in a specific artist by viewing their works online or browsing through books at the bookstore or library.

Visit the art museum to give your child a real appreciation for the scale, color, and texture of art. I remember as a child being totally blown away by how thick the paint was in some places in Van Gogh's work, for example.

If your child likes to draw, consider getting some more advanced materials than plain crayons. There are numerous "how to" books in the library for creating different types of art.

Keep your eyes open for after school enrichment classes dealing with music, drama, and art. These are a great way for your child to get exposed to the fine arts without exposing your wallet to the high cost of private lessons. If your child shows a real interest in a certain area, you can always look into private lessons later.
