Long division is a key skill for 4th graders. It can also be quite hard to understand. One hurdle is the concept of division itself. Dividing is about sharing an amount equally between groups. Here are some real-world examples of why you might need to divide:

  • Figuring out how much each person has to pay when they're sharing a bill
  • Sharing cookies evenly between a group of friends
  • Calculating an average score on your reading tests
  • Determining how many containers are needed for a quantity when each container holds the same amount

Just like multiplication is repeated addition, division can be thought of as repeated subtraction. Let's go back to the cookie example above. If you are trying to share 30 cookies between 7 people, you could take a cookie out of the box for each person (7 cookies), and pass those out. Then repeat the process, subtracting 7 over and over until there are not enough cookies left to subtract 7 again. So it would look like: 30 - 7 = 23; 23 - 7 = 16; 16 - 7 = 9; 9 - 7 = 2. We were able to subtract 7, 4 times. We're left with a remainder of 2 cookies in the box.

Once you've got the concept down, next comes learning how to use long division to calculate your answer for increasingly larger numbers.

Here's a demonstration of how to do it:

Here are two sites that show how to do long division, step by step:

Now, work some out for yourself, using the step by step instructions:

The DividerMachine will quiz you at your selected level. See how many you can get right!

Challenge yourself to even harder problems here.

Lastly, have the computer show you how to work out division problems of your choice! Great for checking homework.

Feel free to stop by after school for clarification on what was taught, if your son or daughter is unclear on a concept.
