Discovering the Layers of the Earth Web Hunt

Introduction:  The earth is made of four layers: the inner core, the outer core, the mantle, and the crust.  You will be exploring these layers during this Web Hunt.  Read the questions below and click on the blue words, in the questions, to find the answers.  Record your answers on a WORD doc. or hand write on lined paper.   Have fun!

1. How thick is the Earth's outer layer? Take the "Virtual Tour of the Universe.”

2. Explain the composition of the mantle. Take the Tour again to find the answer.

3. What layer of the Earth might move during an earthquake?

4. Describe the major difference between the inner and outer layers.

5. Without the earth's crust, what would life be like on earth? Use what you learned from the other questions and your reading to think out this answer.

Post answers as comments:

1.  An old time riddle goes as follows:

One brick is one kilogram and half a brick heavy.
What is the weight of one brick?

2.  What is correct?

Is it correct that seven and five is thirteen or seven and five are thirteen?

3.  This one’s a little tougher.  Don’t give up too soon.

A train leaves New York for Boston. Five minutes later another train leaves Boston for New York, at double the speed.
Which train will be closer to New York when they encounter?
